This new book features over a hundred new oil paintings and drawings by Bath-based artist Peter Brown, whose practice of painting in the open air has earned him the nickname ‘Pete the Street’. The publication accompanies an exhibition organised by the Victoria art Gallery, Bath and has an introduction by Jonathan Benington with ‘live’ voice diary commentaries by Peter Brown. Works of art featured include scenes of well-loved Bath locations such as Milsom Street, Lansdown Road, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge, captured at different times of day and months of the year, alongside views of less well known but equally beautiful corners. Bath’s honey-coloured Georgian streetscapes can be compared with other stunning locations the artist has visited with his paintbox, including Arles, Dublin, Granada, London and Seville. Wherever he goes, the streets, parks and waterways throb with life thanks to his unerring eye for local life and colour, be it human or animal, car or rickshaw. Brown, who is widely acclaimed as one of Britain’s best plein air painters and whose exhibitions regularly sell out, first came to Bath in 1986 to study a foundation course in art. He then continued his training in Manchester and Greenwich before returning to Bath in 1993.
